Several years ago I promised [personal profile] selenak that I would write a Beatles story. It took a lot longer than I expected. This is a crossover between Doctor Who, Torchwood and the film Help! (1965), in which the Beatles played a fictionalised version of themselves. While the Beatles (and some other real people) appear in this story, it is the fictionalised versions that are portrayed in this story, not the real people. Major spoilers for Help! if it’s actually possible to spoil a 50+ year old film, and a lot of plot derailing.

All characters belong to the Beatles etc., not to me, and there is no intent to infringe on their copyright or deprive them of income. Many thanks to Selenak for help with some of the details - I hope you think it's been worth the wait.

In Torchwood / Doctor Who terms this is VERY wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey, and thinking too much about the continuity will just give you a headache…

If not, why not?

I've just posted a story called Vanishing Act on the Buffyverse crossover site Twisting the Hellmouth - https://tthf.me/kl7K

This is basically a Jonathan Creek mystery in a world with superheroes, the main fandoms being Jonathan Creek and an AU non-magical version of Harry Potter - and bits of several other fandoms.

I won't be posting it here because it's set in the Teraverse, a hugely complicated multiple crossover setting created by Diane Castle which must be getting on towards three million words by about twenty authors - the bits you will need to read for it to make any sense, at a minimum, are the first, third and possibly fourth stories of this series: A Brane of Extraordinary Women - together they're about 2 million words! I think it's a fair assumption that most people who read this will already be familiar with this setting from having read these stories over several years, so I'm not going to try to explain it here.

This is the first part of a story set in the universe of my Supergirl Returns series, a variant DC universe with multiple crossovers, although Supergirl is not the main character in this story. Previous stories are archived:

On AO3 - http://archiveofourown.org/series/4031
On Twisting the Hellmouth - http://www.tthfanfic.org/Series-1920

This is a multiple crossover – the main fandoms are the DC universe and CSI, others will be noted at the end of chapters as they appear in the stories, with more detailed notes at the end. All belong to their creators, publishers, production companies etc., not to me, and there is no intent to infringe on copyright or deprive them of income. This story may not be distributed on a profit-making basis.

Note: Earlier stories set in the Supergirl Returns series have referred to a CSI TV show. However, it isn’t the CSI show we know, and characters are completely different, though modelled very loosely on the real Las Vegas crime lab. Whose staff happen to be the people we know from our CSI TV show… In CSI terms this is some time after Gil Grissom left Las Vegas, but well before the show ended.

Frozen

I finally got round to watching Frozen last night - The plot twists on the usual Snow Queen story were quite fun. One thing I did notice was some interesting parallels between the ice palace sequence and a somewhat similar scene in Watchmen. And when I checked, I was not exactly the first person to notice:

http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2014/03/17/_let_it_go_watchmen_mashup_does_let_it_go_pay_homage_to_the_dr_manhattan.html

There's even a vid:

It looks like there were others that have had their sound tracks muted due to takedown notices from Disney.

It's a shame that nobody seems to have done it the other way, with the Watchmen music etc. on the Frozen footage.

And if I haven't recced it before, there's a fun Frozen / Thor crossover fanfic series, in which Loki is Elsa's father:

This is a sequel to London Calling, set several weeks later. You don't need to have read that first but it won't hurt. I have no idea how quickly I'll get this written, don't expect quick updates.

As the Queen's birthday approaches Jane Foster and Darcy Lewis are making plans to return to the USA, Thor and Captain America are expected in London to attend the Trooping of the Colours, and weird things are stirring on Alderney, one of the Channel Islands...

The SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve) is a WW2 organisation in Marvel comics that eventually became SHIELD.

But there are other uses of this acronym out there. One is the Strategic Steam Reserve kept by several countries, a collection of old steam locos kept for emergencies where e.g. a fuel blockade stops diesel getting through, the electricity grid goes down, magnetic pulse with all of the engine electronics fried, etc.

So it occurs to me that someone really ought to write a Talking Steam Train Avengers AU, in which all of the characters are steam engines or associated characters etc. E.g.
- Tony is something very high-tech by steam standards but temperamental - e.g., I think there were some experiments with steam turbine trains before everyone realised it was a stupid idea.
- Bruce is powerful and usually reliable but has a bad temper - when he gets angry he sometimes leaks superheated steam and has been known to ignore signals and even run through buffers.
- Thor is a extremely powerful engine imported from Norway, but not very bright. Loki was the next engine built by the same factory, much more intelligent, and resents his "brother" for his stupidity.
- The Captain is a blast from the past, built to pull military trains, extremely powerful and well armoured. He's patriotic to a fault and never backs away from a challenge.

Not sure about Clint, Natasha, Pepper, etc. Nick Fury is obviously the one-eyed Controller.

I'm not the person to write this, I don't know enough about trains, so please feel free to use this idea. If you do a credit would be nice.

This post by [livejournal.com profile] autopope is an interesting discussion of vampires and parasitology. Some of the comments made me realise that the sort of behaviour shown in a lot of "Soulmate/Soulmark" fanfic AU stories corresponds very well with parasitic infection; the host carries a parasite that needs to mate with another of its own kind (let's say there are ten different types for the sake of argument, that most people are born infected, that the first parasite into a human host stops any other parasite from taking over except under special circumstances such as the death of the first parasite, and that they can only reproduce once or twice). They obviously need to attract another person carrying the same parasite; one way to do it might be to have the bearers born with marks which show which parasite they're carrying, and attract other humans with the same infection - and yes, the parasite is to an extent controlling the host's behaviour by e.g. releasing endorphins an/or pheromones when a suitable mate is near, pumping up the output of chemicals considerably when mating seems likely.

The end result is that you get people born with weird marks who are programmed to "fall in love" with someone whose marks correspond. To make it more confusing the marks might look very different to humans than to their parasites, so that it looks like there are thousands of different soulmarks when the truth is that only a couple of key features (e.g. the precise colour, length, key angles) are relevant to the parasite, the rest is just random.

You can't quite get to the silliest end of soulmark fiction - people born with the first words their true love says to them pre-tattooed on their skin - from this premise, but you can come disturbingly close.

...The Marvel universe has its own version of Clara Oswin, and his name is Stan Lee. He seems to turn up somewhere in the background of most historic events involving superheroes, and his apparent age varies wildly - the 1940s version looks OLDER than the one that appeared in the 1990s etc. He's either a time traveller or someone with a LOT of eerily similar dopplegangers, either would bear investigation by e.g. SHIELD.

Use it if you want it, a credit would be nice.

copied from [livejournal.com profile] liliaeth

When you see this, share 3 random lines from 3 WIPs.

From a Thor crossover (in which Darcy is explaining fanfic to Jane)

“In a Soulmark AU you’d probably have a birthmark the shape of Mjolnir, or his words when you first met, and he’d have a mark that looked like… something science-ey, one of your equations or something.”

From a DC universe multiple crossover (In which Earth is about to get its first Green Lantern)

She’d never really thought about the implications of the word ‘alien’ until she looked inside the wrecked ship. The pilot was definitely not human; humanoid, yes, in having two arms and two legs, two eyes and a mouth, but there the resemblance ended. His(?) skin was purple, creased and lined in ways unlike any human face. He wore a green, white and black costume, and his head turned towards her, weakly, as she pried open the canopy.

From an Avengers crossover with some particularly silly conspiracy theories I'll probably never complete.

The guard backed out and Loki studied the scroll, wondering if Odin had somehow broken from his forced Odinsleep and controlled the raven, in some plot to regain control of Asgard. It was rolled up, held closed by a red ribbon and a dark green wax seal. One side of the seal showed a woman in heavy robes sitting on a throne, holding a mace and wearing a crown, surrounded by a circle of tiny letters, the other a complicated coat of arms. He concentrated, and used a tiny portion of his power to translate the words into All-Speak. “Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, of the Britons and her other realms Queen, Head of the Commonwealth of Nations, Defender of the Faith.” He tried to remember; the Britons were one of the Midgard tribes, of course, the ones living on that ridiculous little island to the north. They’d had some sort of empire, he thought, but since it wasn’t mentioned on the seal he doubted it still existed.

Twisting the Hellmouth is now back on line at tthfanfic.org

There are still some issues with things like downloading whole stories, but it's mostly working again.

If anyone has been trying to access Twisting the Hellmouth's web site they've had a server hard disk failure. They're trying to get the new server up and running now, rather than at the end of the month, but it may take a while.

Update - forums are up and running normally (but you will need to log in again) at
http://forum.tthfanfic.net/

The main site is running in read-only mode (no log ins, reviewing, etc. and some features may not work) at
http://tthfanfic.net

Any news will probably be posted to the forums first.

Another fanfic idea I probably won't write myself.

I saw the movie R.I.P.D. last night - it's very silly and got a lot of negative reviews, but I personally thought it was quite good fun. What I really noticed was that there are a hell of a lot of similarities to the basic ideas of the TV series Dead Like Me.

In DLM some people who die are selected to become Reapers, who collect people's souls just before they die to ensure a smooth passage to the afterlife (which seems to be whatever the dead person wants it to be). It's mentioned that if a soul isn't reaped it stays in the body and quickly becomes a monster, a psychopath or worse. In R.I.P.D. the main characters are cops who have died but are assigned to round up "deados," dead people whose souls have somehow avoided collection (in this case by being drawn into the sky by some sort of vortex); again, escapees become monsters, although this is physical as well as mental. In both the living perceive the dead as different people, so that they can't be recognised by anyone they knew before they died. In both it's apparent that the system is overloaded by sheer numbers, with huge population growth there are simply too many people dying every day.

So the idea I have here is that the Reapers handle the normal cases, with the RIPD going after anyone who falls into the cracks. They don't normally come into contact because there simply aren't that many escapees. Except that in RIPD there's an organised conspiracy for the "deados" to stay on Earth disguised as people and take over the living world - exactly why they think this is a good idea isn't made clear. But as it gets under way the Reapers will start to see more and more failed reaps; this is going to put them under a lot of pressure, and maybe lead to mistakes.

What I'd like to see in a crossover would be the essentially peaceful Reapers forced to work with the RIPD, who are essentially trigger-happy lunatics with badges. Maybe Reapers are assigned to the RIPD to show them what happens when they mess up, or an RIPD cop gets sent to work with the Reapers as a form of sensitivity training. Maybe Roxy (the Reaper whose day job is a cop) is actually an undercover RIPD operative, sent to find out why the system isn't working as well as it should, it wouldn't be that big a personality change. Think "very miss-matched partners" buddy-cop movie and you probably won't go far wrong.

I have an idea for a follow-up to my Thor story - this time short and not too serious. One of the things in there is this conversation between Thor and Tony Stark - does it seem right for the characters?

Does this seem plausible for them - especially, Tony Stark dropping the topic so easily?
