A comment on Tacoma Narrows: material constraints weren't the problem. It was the aerodynamics. Just changing the shape, in the right way, fixes the problem.

(This was even known at the time. The problem came up while the bridge was still under construction, and they had finished designing the fix...five days before it fell down.)
