Under UK law copyright on anonymous and pseudonymous works where the actual author is unknown last for 70 years, if the creator can be determined then it is the standard life + 70 years, so most are probably still copyright. As the company still exists (according to wikipedia it was bought by House of Fraser in 1976) contacting it to ask for permission would seem to be a good idea.
