Should I be surprised...

...that when I looked up the price of a cheap day return to Alton yesterday TheTrainline offered me £16-ish with my senior discount.

When I bought the ticket at the station today and showed my senior card and freedom card the actual price was £8.

So that 100% markup is the Trainline's profit margin for hosting the website?

Some of it would be because there's no way to include a freedom pass (which pays for travel to the outskirts of London) but I think a larger part is profit.

Apparently Virgin's booking site is a bit better, and covers other companies trains, but I suspect booking at the station is still cheaper. In future I shall have to make a point of buying my tickets there.
