Your Life in 2017

Gacked from [personal profile] minim_calibre

MEME!

Grab the nearest book, flip to page 117, the second sentence is your life in 2017

There were three books on my kitchen table, marginally the closest was The Outsorcerer's Apprentice by Tom Holt:

"You'll have to buy a new one, or borrow one from somewhere."

Words to live by...

Since page 117 is just a chart, I'll go with the facing page 116:

"FJS obtains the market for Permian EFPs and discovers that it can buy one for minues $0.27."

"Building Microservices" by Sam Newman: "First, it can make monitoring more difficult."

Yes, but do you want it to?

Well, given the way the internet is going, a bit less monitoring might be a good thing.

"America Unchained" by Dave Gorman

"Only slowly was I able to define what was real and what was not as I separated my bad dream from the here and now."

Yep, another political future.

Hmm - this is from 'Steampunk Tea Party';

The snow was thick on the ground, and there was a bit of a hairy moment with a rambunctuous Yeti, but Mr Woppit and Isaac kept it distracted while we made a rainbow from a profusion of bubbles.'

Life in 2017 sounds exciting!

Sounds like you're in for an interesting year...

I can never figure out "nearest," as I have multiple books on my desk, and often a couple of piles adjacent to it; the concept is not uniquely defined. I think the book nearest to me might be the tenth edition of the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary. For the most part it doesn't have sentences.

I go by - nearest book in my line of sight at the moment of looking for a book. I tend to exclude phone books, dictionaries etc. from these searches on the grounds of silliness. So for example there was actually another book very slightly closer than The Outsorcerer's Apprentice, but it was concealed by my laptop's screen and I didn't notice it until after I'd made the choice.

Okay: Chicago Manual of Style: A, Side-view pontograph of two flowers illustrating the corolla hairs and stigma. (What can I say? If I'm at my desk, I'm very likely to look for a book, and at the moment what I have there is nearly all professional. A few weeks back it might have been Sinisalo's The Core of the Sun, which might have produced quite different results.)

OK, got to admit I have no idea what this implies about 2017, except that you'll probably approach it grammatically.

Or botanically.

"The first Governor is Judgement - you should always place yourself such that you can both judge and react to your opponent's actions"

Yep, good advice given the way the next year's looking!

Interstellar Patrol by Christopher Anvil

"I'm going to be Vaughan the Terrible, Duke of Trasimere, and I'm on the trail of the evil prince and sorcerer Oggbad the Foul, and if anyone disbelieves or doubts my word, I'll punish his impertinence with a couple of blasts from my fusion guns, which are real."

You're going to try to overthrow Trump?

Weird coincidence - I re-read that a couple of weeks ago.
