Chernobyl

If anyone has forgotten Chernobyl, here's a reminder (pointed out by [livejournal.com profile] original_aj) of just how devastating a disaster it was, and how it is still far from over. Despite the title, it's entirely serious:

Biker's Guide to Chernobyl

Chilling... Made more so by the matter-of-fact way in which it is told.

I couldn't help laughing when I read this line: "There were cases of radiactive tv sets and other stuff being sold on city second hand markets and then police shot 7 or 8 of them and it helped"

But of course, that isn't at all funny. :(

Sadly, I'd forgotten how devastating the disaster was, and I can't believe almost 20 years have passed. The sight of the empty city is horrible enough in a still photo. I can't imagine what it must be like to stand there and realize the town is dead.

Thanks for the link.

Thanks for posting the link, Marcus. It's chilling, both the extent of the disaster and how quickly it's faded from the public consciousness. Looking at those pictures, it's easy to imagine what the end of the world might look like.
