Post office peculiarity

Got home tonight to find that the post office had tried to deliver a recorded packet at 10 AM. As usual went round to the local sorting office (which isn't far away) only to find that in the last few weeks they have changed to opening 7 AM to 1 PM. Turns out that it said so on the card, I just hadn't noticed. So customers who are not at home at 10 AM one day are expected to be able to get round to the post office place at e.g. 10 AM the next day to collect mail that they've missed.

How people who are on an early shift or otherwise unable to get there at this time isn't explained. Fortunately I can probably get round there on my way to work tomorrow if I leave early, but it's going to be VERY inconvenient.

Expect this sort of thing to happen a lot as the post office "rationalises" its service.

I believe you can actually contact them online or by telephone and arrange to have it delivered to either another address or another post office with longer opening hours. It's a right pain that you have to do that, but that is the way of the future, it seems.

It's my credit card, and I would really prefer to get it ASAP. If I phone tomorrow it'll either be delivery at work on Friday or at home on Saturday.

I remain deeply furious with new Labour for selling off the most profitable parts of the Royal Mail to private companies, leaving the RM itself to try and struggle to survive.

Of course they probably did it precisely so that the Royal Mail would be destroyed.

Oh, there's no word for how badly Labour are going to get hammered at the next general election.

Me too. Especially with another CD-ROM mailout looming...

As a Royal Mail employee, I'm cautiously optimistic that we're slowly coming out of the crap that was hoisted on us for years and years. A LOT of the good mail's still been taken away and is unlikely to be ever coming back, but overall we seem to be steadying the ship. The overall atmosphere's no longer sheer panic and wondering which shoe's gonna land next.

That's good to know, much appreciated.

I hope you're right, because if not the couriers are going to start looking more and more attractive.
