Somewhat disappointing...

So I tried making my own Octodogs. Not very easy, but I got three or four cut correctly and boiled. As soon as I tried to arrange the tentacles a couple snapped off. But they did come out looking vaguely like the picture. So I tried eating one...

The trouble is that when it comes down to it, they're fairly bland boiled hotdogs, and not very nice. I was hoping that with some relish etc. they'd be OK, but apparently not, and grilled or fried the tentacles will just go rubbery.

So maybe I won't bother to order an octodog cutter thingy after all...

No, I only got a can of six, I used or ruined them all.

Do hotdogs come in cans in the UK? We get them vacuum-sealed in plastic packets here.

Could it be that more expensive ones would taste nicer and if you're going to spend the time making them look interesting too then it might be worth starting with a decent food base? Just wondering. I guess it depends on how much of a hotdog gourmet you are.

The idea was to try this cheaply, but I agree it may have been counter-productive.

And the canned ones always taste awful anyway.

Thanks - since I never buy hot dogs normally I wouldn't know.

Well, only my personal opinion but I never liked the canned ones.

They're a staple feature in anime and manga for packed lunches (obentos) in school stories.

Ignore the speech bubble text -- it's not really that sort of manga, honest
