My TTH nominees

So far I seem to have three nominations for the TTH crossover awards

Best Multiple Crossover - Kafkaesque

Best Movie Crossover and Best of British - Deeds of Maidenly Unkindness

There may be more, it seems to be taking quite a while for them to sort through all the nominations and make sure that there aren't any problems.

Americans don't typically contract "you have" to "you've".

And the relevance of this to my post is...?

In the first few sentences of "Deeds of Maidenly Unkindness" we find Buffy uttering the words, "You tell people you've no teaching experience but went to school or college..."

It's completely implausible as something Buffy would ever say, because of the locution. Undermines the "best" nomination in my mind.

Which is why the story begins with a note to the effect that I'm British and so is my spelling, and by implication my grammar too.

I'm really not going to edit a chapter I wrote seven years ago, and which is posted on at least five different sites, some of which are almost impossible to edit, to change something like that. I'd suggest that you don't read the story if this bothers you.

And I know lots of Americans you say "you've." A quick search of the transcripts for all the episodes shows that just about every character in the Buffyverse has said it, including Buffy.

[identity profile] dsample.livejournal.com 2010-07-22 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
A bit extra info: I found 449 cases of "you've" at least 50 of which were said by Buffy.

And another bit of data:

613 instances of "you have" with 72 of them from Buffy.

So while it might be correct to say that Buffy is more likely to say "you have" than "you've", there is certainly nothing wrong with having her say it.

Perfectly good reasons for not changing stuff; however, I thought it might also be worth pointing out - if only for information - that the "late" Ronald Searle aten't dead yet.

The other nominees (so far) for 'Best of British' are hardly free from similar imperfections. One is by Dave Turner, who has a rather shaky grasp of punctuation and who is far more prone to Britishisms than is Marcus, and the other has King Uther accusing Buffy of being a 'sorcerer' instead of the correct term 'sorceress'. I stand by my nomination (in that category; it wasn't me who nominated it in the other).

Actually I nominated the Turner story. Small world, isn't it...

Dave's story is on my Recs list, and I considered nominating it, but went for yours instead.

"And may the Lord have mercy on their souls...".
Given St.Trinian's reputation/infamy (Delete as Applicable) in the U.K, it explains why they're trying to recruit teachers in the U.S, for the vacant posts, in the first place...

Good luck - anybody who would cross the Buffyverse with St. Trinians deserves something for sheer nerve. :) Must go read Kafkaesque.

I'm new to this - did "Bring Me The Head Of Harry Potter" take an award at some point? I haven't seen anything that multi-universal (not to mention hilarious) since the days when I published Intercepted.
