The Last Days of Steam

Just watching a Timeshift programme called The Last Days of Steam on BBC4, very interesting on the technology of steam engines and their post-war importance, and the construction of a new engine today. It's going to be repeated tomorrow

BBC Four

and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in this technology if you can find it as a podcast or on BBC America etc.

Was it your LJ I saw the link to the Strategic Steam Reserve in? I forget.

If not, there, fascinating piece about how the government kept on Steam trains for a while, in case of nuclear war.

I bet we see steam trains returning. Coal and wood are locally sourced within the UK, and when energy costs spike as peak oil declines, I think Steam is going to make a return big time.

Not me - very interesting though, I vaguely remember a teacher saying something about this in the sixties, can't remember the context though.

Have you caught the BBC series The Tube (about the London Underground) that was on recently? It might still be on iPlayer. It put your local construction work into context for me.

No - but I'll be away for a few days, doubt I'll have a chance to catch it before it goes from iPlayer.
