Mysteron Intentions?

The theme song for the original Captain Scarlet series includes the line

Though the Mysterons plan to conquer the Earth,
This indestructible man will show what he's worth...

Except that I don't recall the Mysterons ever expressing any intention of conquering the Earth - their goal always appeared to be revenge for human aggression after they were brutally attacked by the first Mars expedition without any provocation. So pain, death, etc. yes, but conquest no.

Am I right about this, or is there something I've forgotten?

Yes, it's in the song but I'm pretty sure that they never actually express any interest in conquest in the actual show.

I always kind of assumed that the best form of revenge would be to attack and eventually take over...

They never seemed to do anything that could be seen as a prelude to conquest, just apparently random terrorism. Given that they were always working through mind-controlled puppets the logistics would be very daunting - especially once the human governments got their acts together on e.g. Mysteron detector machines at key locations. I can't see many governments refusing to expose the population to an occasional x-ray if the alternative is Mysteron infiltration.

I can't recall any indication that they want to conquer the Earth - just to make life difficult for various folks. Quite frankly they have a point! Captain Black & co blew up their city on absolutely no provocation.

If they wanted to conquer the Earth, presumably they could destroy the whole planet and then make a new one???

Have you heard the conspiracy theory that Thunderbirds are actually Mysteron Agents? They turn up whenever some disaster has happened and 'rescue' people who couldn't possibly have survived, thus infiltrating more agents into the population. The Hood is the only person to suspect, but they keep thwarting his attempts to reveal them for what they are. :-)

Oooh, I like that! Thanks!

The Mysterons motives didn't make any sense at all. They were like us enough to communicate so what they did just looked stupid rather than weird or sinister. They were there as a plot device and I just wish that a small studio doing a program for children with puppets had spent tons more on a proper script writing team.

I also want the moon on a stick.

I like the THUNDERBIRDS rumor!

And I will encourage all of you who are coming to Worldcon to come and get your dose of Mysteron related madness by seeing THE CANCELLATION AND RE-IMAGINATION OF CAPTAIN TARTAN!

Which Thunderbirds rumour?
