Something I missed earlier, because Tidal Moon is not the best written of these stories and things aren't really described as well as they might be - hipps have some sort of hard outer shell. Back to the drawing board...

Thanks - it's a bit of a cheat because they're described as having a shell, but I really couldn't make that work and end up looking anything at all like a horse or a seahorse.
