One of the advantages of living where I do - heard an odd noise from outside, looked out, and there was Bittern.

I has a transparent scanner...

...or will have if Parcelforce etc. don't screw up. HP Scanjet 4670, the one you put on top of the book and can see exactly how the page is aligned. It turned up on eBay this morning - allegedly full working order etc. I'll post more once it turns up and I've played with it. Hopefully this will help a lot with limiting damage to the really old books.
