Just watched the first episode of the new Dr. Who in a hall with several hundred other SF fans. And it was VERY good (and their FX budget has obviously grown several zeros because the effects were excellent). Rousing cheers for every cheesy line, of course, for the first monster, for the moment when the heroine sees inside the Tardis, etc.

Missed hearing a few lines because of the cheers, of course, but I hope that this time I managed to set the digibox and DVD recorder properly and I'll have it recorded at home too.

Verdict - Excellent, and why the hell have we had to wait so long?

Loved some of the small touches - like Rose's running into the TARDIS, out of the TARDIS, slow walk around the TARDIS and then back inside. Lovely moment when you just knew why she was doing that, but they just weren't showing you yet.

Very well done I thought.

I have access to a blowlamp. I see wheelie bins.

Time to bag me some autons.

£10 million was apparently the budget, whether that was for the whole thing, or just the effects budget, I'm not 100% sure.

And yes, I second your question. Why the hell did we have to wait so long.

I think it's around £1m per epsiode for the series (13 episodes in all) not a bad amount for the Beeb.

I didn't like the burping wheelie bin, but the rest of that scene was excellent.

The actor could have been better, but then, I suppose we were supposed to not like him. He did seem a little bit like he was in pantomime.

But I'm nit-picking. I still loved it to bits.

Now I wish I'd been at the Con - I'd love to have seen this with Fen.

Although my non-fen other half was pretty impressed and she's a tough audience.

It just ran on the CBC in Canada. I enjoyed it a lot.
