...for something that sounds quite cool - the title may go to the Free Universal Construction Kit, a set of 3D printing templates for components to link e.g. Lego and K'Nex and Fischertechnik

That would be an oops, then...

I think it may be deliberate but stupid. Since it ensures that a lot of people won't point kids at it.

This quote from that article suggests you're right: "the Kit encourages totally new forms of intercourse between otherwise closed systems".

It's clearly deliberate, and rather silly given that they're trying to make toys more fun for kids.

It is deliberate. Becuase I'm cited on their website, I wrote to them to comment about a couple of legal misconceptions and in the course of doing so I mentioned that I agreed with other people leaving comments that the name they'd chosen was rather peurile. I got a response thanking me for my interest but telling me that the name was part of their attention-getting marketing strategy. I replied to that to point out that rather a lot of female geeks might find it offensive on the basis that they often heard such language used in less than welcome circumstances; I got no reply to that.

I suspect that they will languish in obscurity until someone (probably another designer) relaunches the idea without this baggage.

Forgot to add that this isn't only my opinion - it's shared by people I know in the hobby games industry, who might otherwise be giving it publicity.
