Outdated...

I think I need to be a bit more careful about canned goods. I was just looking for some soup and found five cans outdated, four of them from 2010-11. The other is only a couple of months and will be supper, but this is not good houshold management...

In the US, the postal workers have an annual food drive, where you can bag up cans and boxes of food to set out by your mailbox that will then go to the local food banks. So, once a year I get a nice reminder in my mailbox to go through our canned goods and clear out anything that's approaching its sell-by date. If it wasn't for that, I'm fairly certain I'd still have things with dates from four or five years ago, too!

Back in my shared flat days, we once found a box of eggs at the back of the fridge that was 9 months past the sell by date.

We disposed of it very, very carefully!

Basically, if they don't float in water they're probably safe enough if you hard-boil them.
