ffutures: (lost world)

I've just discovered that the 1923 silent version of The Lost World is (a) out of copyright and (b) available on line as an MP4 video, http://www.archive.org/details/lost_world

I'm just downloading it to watch it for myself, but I think I may also add it to the next release of the Forgotten Futures Charity CD-ROM - I know that I'd essentially be giving buyers something that they can find on-line anyway, but it's a 160mb download and many people won't want to go to the trouble. While it isn't exactly state of the art cinematography, it does have some nice stop-frame dinosaurs and has always been one of my favourites. I'd add it to the main FF CD-ROM, but that'd only leave about 80mb unused, and at the rate the Forgotten Futures collection is expanding that's only a year or two. And no, I don't want to go over to DVD or multiple disks.

The other possibility is that I could put it on the current release of the charity CD since I only have a couple left, but that'd annoy people who've already bought a copy.

So, a quick poll:

[Poll #582429]

The other one I'd like to add is Melies Voyage to the Moon (yes, I know the correct title is French and that I've left the accents out of his name), but I can't seem to establish if it's in the public domain, or get hold of it as an MP3 / MP4. If someone has an answer to this I'd be grateful.

But just for the record, I would also like to vote Fnord, just on point of general principle.

Maybe I should have done that as a checkbox, not a radio button, but it's too late now, you can't edit polls, fnord it!

I'm sure the secret kings of the world will be paying you a special re-education visit at some point soon for your error in this matter.

What's this about charity CDs? If the Lost World goes on the next one, when will it be available?

*eyes flutter closed at thought of Voyage to the Moon*

Each release of the game goes out to registered users on a CD-ROM which is also sold to anyone who wants it (but isn't registered) in aid of Cancer Research UK. Basically it's a sampler for the full Forgotten Futures CD-ROM, but I'd like it to be more, and adding a movie or two would be one way to do that.

The next one will be out when I've finished the next release of the game, and since I've barely started it due to the problems with the Thorne Smith estate it probably won't be until well into next year.

Thinking about this: it should probably go wherever George E Challenger's Mysterious World is.

Bother, I meant to tick "next", not "current".
