What they don't tell you is that BT's Directory Enquiries service is available as a free web site:
http://www.bt.com/directory-enquiries/dq_home.jsp
This gives you ten free enquiries a day, plus another 200 a month if you register as a user (also free). It seems to work reasonably well, and if you have Broadband it beats the hell out of calling any of the licensed bandits that have taken over from the old 192 line.
