(or rather the one I bought last week which has just arrived)

...was a Fujifilm FV-10D Photo-Video imager

A what? You may well ask...

one of these... )

It's basically a macro video camera, standard sort of PAL resolution, with built-in autofocus zoom, lights, and colour controls. It also has an interface for linking it to a computer. So basically you turn it upside down, unfold the lights and built-in stand, set it up on top of a fairly small object, and it will autofocus on it, automatically set up the lighting and adjust. Or use it the "right" way up (as in the picture) and fold the lights on top, and use it to view negatives as positives. I was pleasantly surprised that it coped with a 20p coin (small, very shiny) perfectly, and the lighting is some sort of cold cathode, so hopefully it'll be OK for stuff that gets harmed by heat.

The down side, of course, is that by modern standards the computer side of it is rubbish - it's 640 x 480 resolution, and the interface is parallel. I have no idea if that side of it works yet, or is compatible with XP, I've only tried the video output so far. But the macro video camera part will be VERY useful for work and my hobbies.

Best part is that I bought it as probably non-working, since it comes with a useful power supply which the vendor said was working, and also has video, computer and SVHS cables, and got the lot for a tenner including postage. Gloat gloat...
