While I was at Novacon someone let me use his log-in to connect my iBook to the mderately expensive network at the hotel. When I got home I plugged in a network cable. I've just gone into another room to wait for tonight's Dr. Who special to start, so I can switch on the recorder at the right moment, and found that I had to log in to use Wifi again. Normally it just works as soon as I switch it on. I think this has happened before after I've used it on another WiFi network.

Not a huge problem since the password is something I easily remember, but it'd be handy if it'd just log on automatically. Any way to do that?

Later edit: Dr. Who was a bit anticlimactic. No spoilers, but it was only about seven minutes long including the titles, and is basically a "Rose meets the new Doctor" thing.

Later later edit of the "Emperor has no clothes" variety: Looking at the messages other people have posted re the Dr. Who episode, I have to ask if several of my friends are on drugs... it wasn't that long, it was pretty much what you would expect from a scene that is designed to have minimal impact on continuity for anyone who missed tonight's charity thing, and could have been written by most Dr. Who fanfic writers pretty easily. Roll on Christmas, when they will be showing a real episode.

One important thing was said though - behind this cut.

Rose and the Doctor know that Jack is alive.

Go to the airport menu (the radar-fan-thing?) and select your network? It should remember the rest.

Not transmitting ID may bugger this cunning plan to conquer the multiverdse.

Mine has taken to asking for the password again, but when I click "cancel" to remembers that it has it saved in my keychain and connects anyway.

I suspect that the problem is with the network at school -- some wierd PC-based thing that is only intermittently reliable. (Sometimes the Appletalk zone just vanishes for a while, for example.)

Make sure you've saved the password in the Network pref pane? I'm not near my PowerBook, or I'd check the exact settings we use.

OK, done that - I'll try connecting to another network then this one again tomorrow, at the moment nobody else in the immediate vicinity seems to have WiFi on, I'll know if it it works then.

I agree, it's a fun extended trailer. Worth watching, but you could certainly have writen it - and I suspect I could. And I don't even write.

Just stumbled in here from kaja's lj, and saw the wifi question. I'm no Mac expert. Heck, I've never owned one, so I'm likely giving completely bogus info on this, but I believe you can create different 'networks' in the Network prefs (assuming OS X.)
The question would be whether this is done under the TCP/IP tab, or the Airport tab. On the TCP/IP tab, it would just be making a new Location. I think the Airport tab has actual Networks you can create.
One of those ought to give you the option of a 'travelling' network, which would log in differently from your 'default' network. Save your username/password for the default, and use the 'travelling' for..er..travel.
I'm betting you're going to be more familiar with this than I, so I'm not going to go research step by steps for it. :)
