I was reminded of these films by something in the latest Plokta, and realised that I only have them on fairly crap tapes. They're available pretty cheaply as a DVD compilation, but none of the sites selling it seem to say if it's widescreen, letterboxed, or standard format.

I suspect standard format and copied from a video release, since there's a widescreen version of The Three Musketeers available that's considerably more expensive. Anyone know for sure?

The versions I have (two-DVD set), are widescreen and a very, very nice quality. They looked great on my friend's HD flat panel.

Great! Thanks, I shall proceed to order them in that case!

What's the cheapest price you've seen on the double-set?

A fiver from play.com. They've also got Pirates of the Caribbean III and Stardust at that price.

I shall wait with interest to hear what you make of the quality of the transfers... if you'd be so kind to share your observations.

Completely off topic but...

I know this is out of left field but...

Have you ever read Alfred Burrage's "The Spring-Heeled Jack Library #1-12" (19 March-May 1904) that's referred to in the Encyclopedia of Fantastic Victoriana?

I'm trying to find somebody (besides Jess Nevins) who's actually read this work.. or who (hopefully) has a copy of it.

Apologies for the late afterthought - I'm pretty sure that he read them at the British Library in London, he was over here on a research trip for the book and said he'd spent most of his time there.

Darn, well... just another reason I wish I could afford to get back to London for a week.

Perhaps, someday somebody will run across a copy....

I wish that Libraries had the resources to put things like this on the internet.

Again, perhaps someday.
