In Miami Martha would have avoided the looters; Horatio Caine shoots them, leaves them dying in the ruins.

"There has to be law," says Caine, "or civilization collapses."

Civilization has collapsed; he's insane, finding excuses to kill, endangering her mission unneccesarily.

Eventually they reach a battered sports fishing boat that will take Martha and a dozen orphans to Cuba. Its owner studies her face as she tells her story.

"The children believe in your Doctor," says Dexter. "You've given all of us hope."

It's nice to know that there are still pockets of sanity left in a world gone mad.

Under those circumstances he'd probably be better equipped to cope than most. And a VERY good person to trust with getting kids to safety. My (unstated) back story there is that Rita and Deb are dead, and the boat and Cody and Aster are all Dexter has left.

I don't watch CSI Miami, but I know enough about the show to figure that was probably an accurate discription of Horatiao.

Boy if she only knew what Dexter was really capable of.

I love the ironic contrasts in Martha's view of the two men.

If your taking requests on where to go next with this, I would love to see Martha cross paths with one of the 4400. I miss that show *kicks USA for canning it before it got to properly conclude*

I was never a huge fan of the 4400, and I can't really remember enough about it to write the characters so they're recognisable in a drabble-length story.
