On my Windows XP PC the widescreen monitor has 1680 x 1050 resolution, the graphics card is a 128mb ATI radeon 9200 and supports it well.

So I just ordered a stand that will let me rotate the monitor to portrait mode, which ought to be useful for editing whole pages at 100% magnification. Except that I just thought I'd give it a try, only to get this message:

The requested Rotation mode is not supported by your current display mode (resolution and/or refresh rate and/or colour depth) Please change the current display mode and try again.

So I tried reducing the colour depth and it doesn't work. It doesn't want me to change frequency because it might damage the monitor. And changing the fracking resolution defeats the object of the exercise.

I suspect that this ends with me either abandoning the idea or buying another graphics card. Any suggestions?

Contact ATI tech support and cross your fingers that you get the Guy Who Knows Stuff?

Except it appears it's no longer supported.

I could only find comments saying that you can't rotate screens on a 9200 e.g.
http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=260&threadid=120686

When you find out, please let me know, as I was thinking about doing something similar today.

Then maybe the question I should be asking is which AGP cards do support this sort of rotation?

Again, when you find out, please let me know!

However, I was searching and found this
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Video-Tweak/iRotate.shtml

Free software that claims that it can rotate displays (under Windows XP) on many graphics cards ... it may be worth you giving it a try before spending money :-)

Didn't work - and I appear to have the latest drivers so it isn't that.

I have an NVidia GeForce GT220 card and it definitely supports rotation at the resolution you mentioned. I just did a 90 degree rotation on my screen with no problem (my monitor doesn't physically rotate so I hadn't tried it before).

Never mind - looks like that's only available as an express card, this computer has an AGP slot.

The latest you might be able to find in AGP are GF7s. On ATI side while HD2000 was technically available in AGP I got the feeling it didn't actually work very well, so X1900 is the latest you can get. Even then, availability for anything over GF5/Radeon 9600 is getting poor.

It may be time I look at a new PC, for this and other reasons. Maybe when I've finished the current games project.

I have a ATI Radeon 4670 AGP card that handles rotation perfectly well under XP. I got it cheap(ish) off Gumtree from someone who had moved to a PCI-e motherboard. Going price for such cards on Ebay is about 60 quid.

Really don't want to spend that sort of money right now - apart from anything else, it might be cheaper in the long term to look at a new PC that takes SATA drives and PCI-e graphics cards etc., I'll have to bite the bullet on that sooner or later.

I have an AGP nVidia card, an Asus V9900 ultra I got off Harry Payne. It has a GeForce FX5800 on board with 128Mb RAM. If you think it could handle screen rotation (I never tried it myself before I moved to this HD4670) and you can stand the fan noise which can be considerable then I can post it down to you or get it to you at Novacon, perhaps.

Apologies, for some reason I've only just noticed this.

Many thanks, but I'd really prefer to avoid fan noise if possible. It's not an urgent problem so it's probably best if I say no, at least for now, and look into this some more first.

I have a Mac, but I think my HP w2408 monitor works on both platforms. It rotates, and it's 24" diagonal.

I used to use a Pivot monitor at work, and when they introduced OS X, they dropped support for it. How I cursed.

I think that the problem here is more that the card just can't keep up, the driver seems to support it until you try to rotate the screen at its best resolution. REALLY annoying...
