Finally watching the Sherlock DVDs and saw the first part of the first episode, which I'd previously missed.

It happens that I work very near to Baker Street, and travel along it fairly often.

Is is ridiculously pedantic of me to point out that their version of Baker Street is totally unlike the real one? Not quite sure where it is, I'd guess more towards Euston on the Bloomsbury side of Euston Road, with Euston Road crossing the end of the road to the right. Since Baker Street is twice as wide and one way throughout its length it's fairly obvious...

Apparently it was shot on Gower Street, which isn't far from Baker Street. Speedy's is a real business there, and has seen their customer base increase since the series first aired.

Yes, that's about the area I thought. It's years since I've been through Gower Street but I should have recognised it.

As the plots bear little relationship to the original, we should not be surprised.

Not really, it just amused me that they didn't even try to get it right.

According to the commentaries, they couldn't use Baker Street, because everywhere you look on Baker Street, there's some sort of "Sherlock Holmes" sign, and it would have taken them too long to remove or cover them all up.

Slight exaggeration, but I can see their point.

You got me a little curious, so I did some looking around with Google Earth. While the street itself might be different, the *building* they found to double 221 Baker Street is a pretty close match (with a sandwich shop, instead of a Sherlock Holmes museum.)

Another thing about Baker Street: From your description, it's fairly busy, which would also make filming there more difficult.

Oh, there are all sorts of reasons why it isn't suitable, it's just that they were unusually blatant about it.
