Just what I needed...

Noticed on my way in to work that my clutch cable (BMW R80 motorbike) is about to fail - the wires are coming apart at the handlebar end. I'm going to order a replacement cable as soon as I get home (always assuming it gets me home!) - they're not very expensive but they aren't stocked by most bike shops. Given the state it's in I'll have to leave it at home until the cable comes and I can do the repair, which probably means next weekend.

I'm vaguely wondering if I can bodge a temporary repair somehow, but even with the way it's stretched I doubt that there's enough slack to knot it or something. Anyone got any suggestions?

Not for a quick fix, but for the future: if they're cheap and fail not infrequently, buy two.

Never happened to me before, in 20-odd years of riding this type, so not common enough to make keeping a spare worthwhile.

Tube. But yes, I had worked that one out for myself...

Oooh, how about walking? It'll help whip you into shape, and it isn't -that- far, is it?

Oo! Or a bicycle! It's like walking, but faster and more dangerous! You could -pretend- it's a motorcycle by making that "vrrrrooom" sound while you pedal!

<SARCASM>Thanks Matt, that's really helpful</SARCASM>

Unfortunately I need to get most of my xmas shopping this week, so it isn't actually a very useful suggestion...

Well as, I'm afraid, a confirmed member of the two wheels good, four wheels better tendency, I'd have to say that when it comes to bikes my vote would be against "bodging", however inconvient being without transport for a few days might be.

I agree, but there may be a way to keep going for a few days that I don't know about, which would save me a LOT of hassle this coming week. Normally I'd run it round to the bike shop tomorrow and see if they can do something pending the arrival of the correct cable, but I've got guests in the afternoon and won't have time to do it. I'll probably end up leaving it at home, but it'd be nice to have other options.
