What do you do if the network adaptor on your PC - the USB connection to the cable modem - is set up to use the 192.168.0.1 subnet and you want to have a second network port in it as part of an ad-hoc wireless network? Should I give it a different subnet address?

Didn't have any of this crap when I set up my router as an infrastructure network - I'm very tempted to go buy a cheapo router and set it up for my bro-in-law just to get this over with.

If by a second port you mean a second physical interface (such as for example a WLAN card of some sort), then yes, you'll need to put it on a different subnet.

Getting a cheapo router/base station to handle it will almost certainly be the least amount of work in the long run.

I can probably get an 802.11b router for 20 pounds or so, but 11g routers are still comparatively expensive. I'm beginning to think that buying one for myself and giving the 11b router to my brother in law will eventually be the easy answer, but I can't actually afford one right now - maybe when I get paid.

Can you suggest a subnet that isn't likely to be used by anything else?

If he's only got one interface now and it's using 192.168.0.0/24, then 192.168.1.0/24 should be fine. If it's not, http://www.michna.com/kb/IpAddressesPrivate.htm (for example) lists all designated private IP ranges.

Thanks! I'll try it tonight.

Actually, I didn't in the end - spotted a really cheap 11g router on eBay and bought that, they can have my old 11b one which I know works pretty well with the card in the laptop.
