Sherlock

I actually figured out most of Sherlock fairly early, though I was expecting the cause of the fear to be some sort of infrasound weapon, not a toxin. The rabbit was a bit of a give-away that evil science was afoot - those luminous genes don't come cheap - the villain was a little too obvious, possibly I was remembering the original, and I had a vague sort of idea that HOUND would turn out to be an acronym for a weapon name, I just got wrong on the details. They ditched most of the signals / escaped prisoner / evil housekeeper part of the original story, which was probably a good move, and the real rationale for the "signals" was suitably silly.

Great fun throughout, and some classic moments, not least Sherlock's memory palace. And huge kudos for casting Russel Tovey (George the werewolf from Being Human) as the Hound's prey.

I was a little confused right at the end as to what that was meant to be?

The dog was a real dog - HOUND was the fear gas.

I think she might have been referring to the final scene, with Moriarty... which is a set up for the next episode.

Yes. And it doesn't bode well.

I loved last week's episode, but though this one was quite weak.

Not that bit at the end - the bit right at the end - with the Moriaty in a prison cell covered with the word Sherlock.

I'm assuming that's what it was - but I sort of did not get how we got there. Which I suppose is the same as the books - Moriaty is his arch foe but we never really see the stories of them "fighting".

I thought the plot was tenuous in the extreme, and as usual rushed through with lots of incidental fireworks and fast talking to get us past the holes. They write it the same way they write nuWho, fairly obviously, only with tropes nicked from Conan Doyle rather than from realWho. And I'm starting to think Russell Tovey is going to be one of those actors who spends a long and lucrative career playing the same character in every production. Hey, it worked for Peter Bowles, so why not.

Actually, I was thinking of the Tovey casting as a joke.

Yes, I thought it was something of an in-joke (werewolf reference) too.

In the Memory Palace scene, when he came to "Liberty Bell March" I was half expecting to see Monty Python come up next, and then have Sherlock dismiss it with a flick of his hand, but they did play the tune.

I had also come to conclusion that it was some sort of psycho-active chemical in the hollow that was causing the hallucinations, with infra-sounds as a backup explanation.

Well, the big exemplar for artificial fear is of course Scarecrow in Batman, and that's how he does it - a toxin to induce fear, plus additional stimuli to direct the reaction.

Yeah, and my husband picked up the US connection early on when the doc mentioned his "cell" number.

Six digit password for CIA access? yeah, right ...

I thought Sherlock was a bit slow to catch on to some things.

We enjoyed it too although it wasn't as strong as last week's and we'd twigged much of the plot long before SH seemed to. I suppose the cell reference will not be so jarring to an international audience.
