Gosh, these 3D printers are game changers in all sorts of ways.

Games Workshop must be crapping themselves.

Realistically, the quality of stuff made with 3D printers you can get today at even vaguely affordable prices isn't going to worry GW - they simply don't come close to producing the level of detail in a good moulded figure, and won't any time soon. Thre are also practical difficulties in getting from an existing 3D object to something that can be printed - 3D scanners apparently aren't as good as you might think in this respect.

Not sure about the first bit, but I'm pretty positive that once that is fixed people will start 'writing' their own GW compatible figures and sharing them around and the market in 3D image files will start up, even if just scanning an existing figure isn't an option. Considering the amount of time people are willing to put in to reskinning FPS video games.

Already happened; GW have already issued takedown notices!

I admit to slight smugness at predicting this three years ago; see my paper on 3D printing and IP (the section that footnote 19 relates to).

Things HAVE moved on fast - last time I looked the quality was nowhere near that good.
