With the early nights starting and the weather turning chilly walking to work is losing a lot of its charm, and I'm thinking more seriously about getting another bike.

A relatively new 250cc scooter or similar is probably what would be best for me and my current lifestyle. So why is it I keep lusting after old BMW boxers? Yes, for me they're a known quantity and I like them a lot, but do I really want another oversized 20-year-old bike, even one that's allegedly only done 51K miles?

Must resist temptation...

How much is the 20 year old with 51k miles on the clock?

More than I want to spend. About a grand more...

Which is why it would be a VERY silly buy.

Particularly at this time of year too.

This time of year is why I want a bike - walking is losing a lot of its charm.

Ah, my biker friend always used to tell me how put his bike away in the garden shed over the winter months, because the roads became death traps. But, that's up here, on reflection it must be totally different in the big city.

Pretty much right - in central London there might be a couple of days a year when the roads are unsafe due to snow and ice, but there's so much traffic that most of the time nothing gets time to settle.

Trouble is bikers can never quite give their heart to a scooter, no matter how hard we try.

No argument there, but I really don't need a bike that can do the ton to carry me two miles to work, and that's 95% of my biking these days.
