...you find an old AOL distribution disk in the current pile of junk...

...and it's a floppy, not a CD

There's a box of those sitting at my parents' place, both disks & cd's. My mother uses them for making patterns in her pottery. =)

I'd say put that thing up on eBay. Might make a quid or two off of it.

Too late, it's already in the bin and covered with orange peel etc.

My crap isn't quite that bad... But only because I moved in here after AOL gave up on floppies. I have no doubt that there would be floppies and even Mesopotamia On Line clay tablets if I'd been here long enough.

I'm trying to be pretty ruthless about decluttering, unless there's a realistic chance i'll use stuff it's headed for the bin / ebay / charity shops etc..

Plausible. See also my large collection of laser disks, 19th century magazines, etc. etc.

I had binned them, she fished them out for her pottery work.

Fair enough - not your clutter then...

The lengths some people go for their hobbies, right?

They were quite handy back in the day when floppy's were still quite expensive, I think I used them all through university for saving stuff onto.

No food waste recycling in your area then? :-)

These days, very little grungy stuff goes in the refuse sack.

Hahahaha! I just went though and binned/recycled thousands of old floppies (both 5.25" and 3.5"), zip discs, jazz discs, Bernoulli discs, tape backups, and CDs. It was like a walk down memory lane.

Not round here - Westminster do do glass/paper/cans etc. recycling but not food. When I remember I put vegetable waste into a composter, but I didn't think it worked for orange peel.

Those were the days - but it's years since I needed one, or even owned a computer with the drive, it's time to be ruthless.

At some point I need to test some hard disks again, then if they still don't work bin several hundred gigabytes worth.

Yeah, I've still got a box of floppies in the wardrobe, with stuff on them, but long since stopped owning a computer with a drive. I honestly don't know why I'm keeping them either.
