The XT box I have for the big TV is also getting flaky, though I think in that case it simply needs to be wiped and reinstalled. I'm thinking Linux; it's 2ghz and has 2gb RAM and 80gb hard disk and is used mainly as a media PC, any suggestions for something that will work on a machine that limited?

There are loads of lightweight distros. My old netbook had 512MB of memory, and a not very vast Intel Atom processor, but it happily ran several of them (not at the same time). I eventually settled on Lubuntu, but I also liked Linux Mint XFCE (which I use on the replacement netbook).

I've decided to try the older Ubuntu I'm using as the alternative on my main machine, it seems to be pretty stable. Not tonight though, I've wasted hours trying to sort out this one and it's still VERY slow.
