Now I think I start looking at the add-on scenarios etc. for the game, I didn't want to do so earlier because some of them add better ships etc. and it felt like cheating.
Masses; go to www.oolite.org and check out the wiki for links to them. Some just change the look of ships, others add extra missions, new weapons and ships, etc., a better version of asteroid mining, new types of base, more detailed planets, more aliens, etc.
But it's still the same game - you don't really interact except by trading or shooting. Allegedly the new on-line multi-player Elite will do that and a lot more, when they launch it.
Probably best to take it slowly and build up some experience first - some of them make the game much harder, e.g. by beefing up enemy AI, or make it more difficult to recover from your mistakes if you break the law.
Thargoid Wars - increases the likelihood of running into them, and has some war-related scenarios. Doesn't work in Galaxy 1 to make sure you get some experience first.
Cabal Common Library - adds graphics routines needed by other stuff.
BGS (Background set) - adds much better visual effects, sound, etc.
Skilled NPCs - makes some of the opposition tougher.
New Cargoes - what it sounds like, adds weird trading possibilities and some new variations on the basic cargo types.
Random Shipnames - gives every ship you see a name, some of them are great fun.
Snoopers - a news service, I may end up ditching it since it's quite expensive and doesn't seem very useful.
But to use all this you need reasonably fast graphics and processor, of course, because Oolite has to parse it all and make it work.
Sorry, Snoopers isn't the expensive one, there's a cargo and shipping news service associated with the New Cargoes module but you don't have to use it.
