Doctor Who - History of the British Republic?

Do we have any idea when and how Britain became a republic in the timeline that's now home to Rose Tyler and family, where Harriet Jones is President?

I've a vague idea for a story but it needs the change to have happened in the late 1930s or early 1940s.

I don't think they ever even hinted at the reason why did they?

If you need the change to have happened in the 30s/40s, blame the Germans! Big old bomb caught the Royal Household bunker just so... :)

Possible, I was thinking more of the fascists getting into power then toppled by a revolutionary government as in Spain.

I would say the most likely time would be at the abdication of Edward VIII.

BTW, had an idea for if you ever feel like doing another Olaf story - he's the troll that appears in Hogwarts early in Philosopher's stone, and REALLY messes up the HP universe!

I thought of that, maybe triggered by a failure to abdicate. The other, more recent possibility is - what if Princess Di had lived?

I believe the original intention was to have that timeline come about from a scenario the werewolf killed or infected Queen Victoria. I think they dropped it because an ongoing "wolf" aspect would get mixed up with Bad Wolf.

Thanks. That's a possibility, but I really need there to be aristocracy up to the 1930s or so - it's a Lord Peter Wimsey crossover - so I think I'll be looking at the later possibilities first.
