...was from my home along the canal to Alperton, which appears to be 5.71 miles all in, a reasonably good walk. What isn't so good is the time it took, a bit over 2.5 hours. I really need to improve my speed a bit, or I won't burn off much energy!

It's somewhat counterintuitive but the number of calories burned while walking, jogging, running etc. the same distance is about equal (from memory, it's about 300 calories a mile). The extra exercise in running makes for sweat, builds muscles and encourages better cardiovascular functioning but doesn't do much for the waistband.
