Not for the arachnophobic!



Around this time every year the holly hedge in my front garden has quite a few of these fellows. The body's about 3/4" long, and they seem to do a pretty good job of catching flies. The interesting thing about this one in particular is that he's managed to put his web above the hedge - by swinging a line from (or to) a tree about fifteen feet away. A really major feat of engineering for something that size.

I think it's just the common British garden spider - probably a female, the males are smaller.

Somewhere I have some photos of our local orb spiders. They're very pretty and weave enormous webs overnight.
