I'd imagine that there'll be an announcement on the Livejournal Eastercon community eventually, but until then... I received this tonight, have no reason to think it isn't genuine.

Dear Pasgon member

First and foremost, thank you for supporting us in our project to host the first Eastercon in Wales. Without members, there is no convention.

However due to a number of circumstances that we are unable to rectify, we regret to say we are forced to fold the convention. Everyone involved has worked hard to try and make it work, but we are unable to proceed. We can only apologise for any disappointment, and add that more information will be forthcoming in due course.

Arrangements are being made to fully refund memberships, however we are also hoping to offer a mechanism for people to transfer their memberships to any replacement event that steps up to replace us.

Once again, you have our heartfelt thanks for supporting us.

The Pasgon Team

So no Eastercon next year unless someone puts a bid together pretty quickly...

update - announcement is here:

My understanding is that people are already scrambling to form a bid.

I hoped someone would, but it's very short notice.

When the 2007 Eastercon collapsed the replacement was put together as late as Novacon in 2006.

True, but it would be nice to sort it a bit earlier if possible.

Wow, that's pretty big. Any idea what happened?

No idea.

Looking at the statement, I'm guessing something went wrong with the hotel.

There was no combination of 'amount the hotel wanted to charge the con' and 'number of members that would join under that scenario' that gave confidence the convention was viable.

We have lofty plans for Follycon, and one of them is that we would to spend part of the two years re-establishing the hive mind understanding of how to run an Eastercon, and getting it online (there is stuff online but it's 20 years out of date).

That would help future committees, especially ones made up of younger, less grizzled, conrunners.

Thought it might be something like that.

Ah, yeah, that's a tough nut to crack. Good luck with it!

Haven't received an e-mail from them yet, but they did e-mail me last year about my cheque, which has since been deposited, so they have my e-mail address and my money, so I guess I'm a member.

Keep an eye on it; things have been a bit shambolic generally, you don't want to get lost in the cracks.

They're saying that people who haven't had an email should email them at membership@pasgon.org.uk or chat to them at Mancunicon

Yes, I'd seen that.

Seriously? I'd imagine the top one was George R.R. Martin and/or James Nicoll, really can't believe this came close.

Incidentally, did you see the news item yesterday that George had to assure his fans that he was not the George Martin who'd died this week?
