Copyright problems

The English House of the Future is an article about the future of architecture in Britain - written in 1903, there are contributions by various architects, and a small essay by H.G. Wells, a little over a thousand words... for which his estate wants a payment of £100 before they'll let me put it on line. That simply isn't going to happen, so I'm considering my options.

Basically, without the Wells part it isn't very interesting, but does have a couple of nice pictures showing bits of London in various styles with "futuristic" cars and airships. But they really need the article to make sense. Wells' copyright doesn't expire until August 2016. So should I...

Later: What I've done in the end is mention that the article exists, and ask that if anyone knows of it being on line anywhere outside the UK they let me have the details, so that I can link to it.

Another Article - A Scheme for a Great National Monument by David Walsh, M.D

An engagingly loopy and (despite appearing in April 1903) I suspect seriously-intended proposal to build a an enduring tomb and monument of the Empire in London.

It's an interesting look at one of the last big refractor telescopes, but formatting HTML for measurements in weird fractions of an inch is a total pain!

Android box working

I've managed to sort out the Android iPlayer etc. box - sound is via the TV, which isn't ideal, but it works OK. I'm using a remote control HDMI switch so that I can have that and my DVD player connected without messing about with cables - I picked that up incredibly cheaply on eBay a couple of years ago, I was the only bidder and I think it was about four quid including postage. So right now I have nine remote controls in my sitting room:

TV
Amp
2 DVD players (one is a recorder, the other is a cheapo upscaling model that gives a better picture)
Laserdisc player
Freeview box
Android box
HDMI switch
CD player / audio amp
Also a mouse and keyboard for my spare PC, currently hooked up to the TV but rarely used.

Superfluous technology? Moi?

The silly part is that 90% of the time I watch TV it's on the smaller set in my workroom. Where I now have one remote...

Very delayed realisation - Realised Friday that I can use the earphone socket from the TV for the sound! Just take the signal from that to the amp and I'm in business, I think I even have an extra-long cable for it somewhere so it won't cost anything.
