ffuturesSo - looks like the Freedompop account is meeting my needs fairly well.
It gives me 200 MB data, 200 texts, and 200 minutes of calls a month free of charge, with no rental etc.
With six days to go of my first month I still have 195 minutes, 193 texts, and 148mb of data. Given how few calls / texts I make, I was really only worrying about the data, but I've not been especially frugal about using it if I needed something online, so hopefully I'm going to be OK. Of course I don't tweet, don't do snapchat, prefer to listen to music with a proper amp and speakers, etc. etc., so a lot of the data-intensive stuff is passing me by. Fingers crossed I'll be OK anyway.
