Art for the sake of art?

heliograph suggested that artwork might not be an important factor in the decision to buy a PDF RPG supplement. Since it's my main stumbling block with Elvis: The Legendary Tours I thought I'd ask do a little research:

Just realised a couple of answers are vague. "Some" and "a little" are pretty much synonymous to me.

I agree that it's subjective, but I don't expect to get any sort of accuracy anyway, just a rough impression.

How are you on copyright violation if I quickly rough up some sketches based on the photomanips you did in your last entry? Is that sufficient distance from the original source as to avoid any potential legal problem?

Unless art is diagramatic (deck plans, maps) then its function in a RPG is to express what the game is like to someone who's flipping through it in a store. No one will flip through this game in a store, so you don't need illustrations.

Sometimes I think it helps people to visualise characters etc., which can be a plus.
