Livejournal staff just posted a self-congratulatory 18th anniversary post. It may be indicative that it only has 35 comments after several hours, almost all derogatory. Usually something official there gets several hundred comments, the change does not suggest long-term viability, at least from English-language users.

I wonder if they realize what they've been strong-armed into doing to themselves?

I doubt they care much - the English users are mostly a dwindling source of revenue to LJ management, advertising to Russian users is the big cash cow.

I wonder if they are soft-screening comments to avoid a pile-on.

I'm afraid it really is just a big decline in the English-language user base.

I know for a fact that they screened a ton of comments on the previous post, so that's almost certainly one reason.

And also, that more and more users realise that LJ are completely uninterested in what their users think.
