Stupid WiFi question
Jan. 1st, 2018 10:01 pmI forgot to mention that I picked up another iMac G4 just before Christmas, a 17" 800mhz model. A bit slow and can only be upgraded to OS X 10.4 (Tiger) but I should be able to make a modest profit on it since it's actually boxed, the first I've ever seen with the original packaging.
For some reason this has an old Airport card, the original Wifi 11b type. It can't use the later Airport Extreme card which does 11g. I would sell it without Wifi if it didn't already have the card, but since it's there I'd like to make it useful. The snag is that it appears not to support modern encryption properly - it works OK with the "BT With Fon" unencripted service, but won't connect to the router otherwise. Not a problem if I connect it with a cable, of course.
What I was wondering was if anyone has come up with some sort of software patch for updating these cards to modern standards. Anyone know? Or am I wasting my time?

Date: 2018-01-02 12:30 am (UTC)As shipped that card only did WEP (which is of course ludicrous). This thread implies that you might possibly be able to get it up to WPA (not WPA2) without AES, which is probably still insufficient.
