First Person Shooter

"Head shot!"

Ammo low. Xander spots a gun shop, shoots the lock, gets an assault rifle, 200 rounds. Outside again, another demon, fires.

Movement on the left. Frag it. Damn, that was a friendly. Never mind.

Move through the town. Body on the porch, could be feigning. Put another shot in it.

More demons. Take 'em out. Where's the BFG?

Reality shifts. Xander's on the street surrounded by dead children. He goes looking for Buffy and Willow. The police find him first.

In the cell Xander's patient. He knows that eventually Buffy and Willow will rescue him, once they've re-spawned.

End.

Author's Note: One of my problems with the Halloween episode is that all of Xander's experience of firearms comes from games like Doom, Diablo etc., in most of which "friendly fire" frags are a common event, and result in nothing more than temporary inconvenience. If Xander turns into the character he imagines you can forget any ideas of firearms discipline or safety. This Drabble is bought to you by way too many hours of Doom and Unreal Tournament.

I assumed the point was that you turned into a *real* example of whatever you were dressed as. My only problem with that episode was that that hour or two of being a soldier turned into the Plot Device From Heck whenever they needed some hardware afterwards.

Willow turned into a ghost unlike any other we've seen in the Buffyverse. Buffy became an idealized version of a noblewoman, nothing like the real thing (too clean, too impractical - running a noble house was a complicated business - and way too squeamish). I think Xander was also his idea of a soldier, not the real thing. And I agree, it turned into too much of a plot device, even though they only used it a couple of times before he forgot most of it.

I don't read Halloween fics, but I had to read yours. I'm glad I did-I enjoyed this one.

I always wondered how many kids were killed on Halloween by either real demons or other kids dressed in Ethans costumes.

Brrrr. I can just see him, waiting in that cell. Then, of course, he escapes from the psychiatric ward they put him in....
