By May Brexit will have presumably happened, and the UK will be encountering initial problems, even if it's successful eventually. So running a big VE Day anniversary then is a useful propaganda move.
It's celebrating VE Day, which is of course a victory for the valiant Brits against evil Europeans. Never mind the contributions of America, Canada, and tens of thousands of European refugees including some of the nationalities that the Brexiteers particularly dislike, that doesn't fit into the narrative they're pushing. So far as they're concerned Britain can go it alone and come out victorious.
It'll be interesting to see what the press is saying around that time.
