DHL just sent me an email saying that my parcel is at their "Sortation facility"

Are they making words up, or does that useless alternative to "sorting" actually exist in a dictionary somewhere?

Later - apparently it is, and dates from the 19th century - see the comments. Which once and for all proves that the Victorians could sometimes be idiots...

It's in the online version of the Oxford dictionary, Merriam Webster and Collins English, so I guess its a word now. It's too young to be in my online Etymology extension tool in Chrome.

And it's in the Chambers app, which is the 2014 (corrected 2016) paper edition. Definition: A sorting out.

And I just checked the 2nd. edition OED. First citation 1844, most recent 1899.

A reference to it turned up in the changing language column in today's Observer.
