During Eastercon I may want to make a side trip to Kilmarnock, which is about 25 miles from Glasgow. Trouble is that I'm going to Glasgow by train and will be collecting a fairly heavy package from Kilmarnock if this comes off. I also can't drive a car, I only have a motorbike license. So... how easy is it to make this trip by public transport? A simple train ride, or a complicated nightmare? How big a town is Kilmarnock anyway? Is everywhere in affordable taxi range?

Any information would be useful. Or if anyone happens to be driving via Kilmarnock en route to the con and feels like making a pickup for me...

I should stress that this is VERY tentative, and largely dependent on something I want to buy on eBay staying at an affordable price.

Thes guys are your friend: go to the journey planner page and give it the starting and finishing addresses....

[Centre to centre, it's 35-40 minutes by bus or train, rising to almost an hour if you go from the SECC]

Thanks - sounds pretty doable then. If I get lucky on the price...

Kilmarnock is effectively a suburb of Glasgow, plenty of buses and trains between the two even on an Easter weekend. It's a largish town and the train station will be in the town centre but most people will live in the suburbs a couple of miles away. There is a good(ish) town bus service that will get you from the centre out to where you want to get to, or close by.

I'll second that. I grew up in Irvine (about 5 miles away) and spent a lot of time in Kilmarnock (at college and just hanging around with mates). There's a good public transportation system, and the bus station and train station are within a couple of hundred metres from each other.

Going from memory, if you get into the bus station, make sure you get in before 5pm as the local office there closes after that if you need information. You also want to be careful of hanging around there after 9pm or so. It might have changed, but back 7-10 years ago, the bus station and the area surrounding was where a lot of alkies and teens would hang out. There were a lot of pubs and clubs around that area.

I've got a couple of mates who live there right now so if you need more specific up-to-date information I can get it for you.

Damn, has it really been 7 years since I left?

Thanks - this'll probably be on Friday morning or Monday afternoon so evenings hopefully won't be a problem.
