ffutures: (lost world)

I've spent most of the day working on Forgotten Futures X, and also decided to do something I've been putting off for a while - converting the big revised set of game rules to PDF, and putting it on line as a free download. While there have been PDF versions for a while, they're based on the first version of the rules and don't include a lot of the background stuff I added in the last revision.

Made a good start on that this evening - got the first third or so reformatted, which is basically all of the main game rules and a big chunk of the stuff on role playing. Hopefully I'll get the rest done tomorrow. The full monte looks to run to 100+ pages, my first bash at making a PDF came out at a bit over a megabyte which isn't too bad. This is undoubtedly because the illustrations are all pretty small.

FF X is going pretty well, I've made pictures to illustrate the stories, written the introduction, and got a few paragraphs into the text describing real-world and fictional clubs. What I'm trying to avoid is huge swaths of stuff cut and pasted from Wikipaedia and other web sites; it'd be easy enough to do it that way, but I'm not convinced the results would be worth it. Probably better to use my own words, keep things brief, and add links to Wikipaedia etc. where relevant.

So - a certain amount of progress has been made, and hopefully I'll have some of the more interesting stuff ready to post for comments in the next week or two.

Wikipedia and links

One problem with links in general is that they don't always work. Another is that they are useless if you are off-line.

A problem with Wikipedia in particular is that it's blocked by the Great Firewall. No idea if you have any sales in China, but I'm getting rather frustrated right now at reading blogs where people link to sites I can't access. Assuming you have room, a copy of the Wikipedia article in question, with a link to the online (and presumably updated) version, might be a good compromise.

I know it isn't an ideal solution, but I really don't want to rip off a load of wikipedia articles. Anything that I need to have in the game will be written into the worldbook etc. - any external links will be for reference purposes, in-depth background, not anything needed to run the game.
