I occasionally have to watch things in 4:3 on my widescreen, and it's about the same size as my old tv used to be too. It's amazing how quickly the eye adapts and focusses out the wasted screen space.
Mind you, it's also quite surprisingly how quickly one adapts to a stretched image.
