Consternation...

[ffutures]

... is the 2005 British Roleplaying Society convention, which is going to be held at New Hall, Cambridge on August 12th-14th, 2005. They've just announced the guests, David Pulver (GURPS Transhuman Space etc.) as Guest of Honour and.. er.. me as UK Guest, not apparently of anything in particular, presumably on the well-known principle of being someone cheap who was going to be there anyway. Actually it is an honour to be asked, just hope I'll be up to it.

Full details can be found on their web site. Previous New Hall conventions have been excellent, and I hope I'll see some of you there.

if you don't have some idea why, you've presumably had nothing to do with the hobby in this country at any time in the last twenty years.

It ought to be - New Hall is a near-perfect place to run a small (around 100 people) RPG or SF convention, and I've never been to a bad one there. Famous for being a building allegedly designed for the middle east but built in Britain, and for the Thunderbirds-style giant lift that used to raise the breakfast buffet from the kitchens up two floors to the dining hall - now replaced with a larger and much better permanent buffet in an extension added a couple of years ago, but it isn't the same, dash it... people used to come up to breakfast early just to watch the thing rise from the floor and hum the Thunderbirds "giant machinery moving very slowly" theme.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the giant carp and goldfish that live in a moat around the central quadrangle and may have inspired the very narrow fish pond in one of Terry Pratchett's books.

Sadly, the story that The Dome (we had it before London, damnit) was originally designed for the University of Iran has now been confirmed as fiction. The Senior Bursar (or someone like that) who retired a few years ago apparently loved the rumour and encouraged it on all occasions, but knew better.

Congratulations on being the GoH, Marcus. After all you've done for the hobby, you deserve it!

Thank the gods it's not Constipation ;o)

If I'm still in the country, I'll definitely be there as it's the only con I can leave at night to sleep in my own bed.
