Captain Jack is an idiot...

I liked last night's episode a lot, but there were two moments of EXTREME dumb that really annoyed me...



When someone calls you and tells you they are in danger, and you get there about five minutes later and find that she has drowned (or however she was killed), you do NOT cuddle the corpse and do sod all else - you start CPR and keep going until the paramedics arrive.

Similarly, why did nobody try the Heimlich thing etc. on the guy who was attacked at the end?

Other than that, a nice creepy horror / Highlanderish episode and very different from the usual alien invasion thing.

Wonder if Terry Pratchett saw it, and what he thinks of it, given his own work in this field.

That bugs me in so many programmes, not just Torchwood. Midsommer Murders does it regularly. Even CSI:XXX does it. The only times you get real first aid protocols being applied is in medical dramas.

It annoys me as well but actually is what happens in real life more or less (unfortunately). Despite the best advice being given by 999 call takers in Ambulance control centres people tend to panic or shut out what is going on.

I have found families sitting in one room weeping while the patient lies next door or the even the family member having to be dragged off the patient to allow us to work.

Handy advice. If you are squeamish about the whole mouth to mouth thing just do chest compressions, it is better than nothing at all and DON'T do CPR on a bed or soft furnishings, it doesn't work, get them on the floor (don't worry about hurting them they won't feel it).

Amusingly, in one of the earlier eps, they DID use CPR - on a bloke with a gaping chest wound. Duh.

In previous episoded Jack has brought people back from the dead - and now when the love of his life croaks he seems to have forgotten how!

I waited until after I'd watched the version I downloaded before reading your message, and spent the entire episode looking for Jack to do something really dumb. I guess I've become overly jaded by TV shows declaring people dead, without anyone actually doing to try to revive them. I did wonder a bit about the lack of CPR with the old lady.

I must say, I'm even more confused about Jack's back story now. I had assumed that the WW-II Jack was the guy that Rose and the Doctor picked up in London, and left stranded way in the future after Rose brought him back to life, and that he somehow got back to the 21st century. But now we find out that Jack was around in 1909 too. Was that before, or after he met the Doctor? Were there two Jacks on Earth during the blitz? How old is he really?
