Yep, that was the one, and just as enjoyable on the re-read. I've been wallowing in Modesty at the moment, and am in one way sick as a chip that Daniel Craig has been Bonded as he would have been the most perfect Willie Garvin ever.

Have you perchance seen the film "My name is Modesty" (Imdb http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0347591/) which is set during the time of Modesty working for the Louche gang prior to the establishment of The Network. It's actually very good, peppered with childhood flashbacks and very little retrofitting, mostly involving Lob's history and role. I really recommend it especially after that '60's travesty.

Yes, I saw it after I wrote Counter-Coup. I agree, it's much better than the original Modesty Blaise film.
